World Hepatitis Day is a global initiative to raise awareness about hepatitis and it impact on millions of lives. On this important day, let’s come together to learn, educate and advocate for prevention, testing and treatment. Together, we can eliminate hepatitis and ensure a healthier future for all.

On July 28 2023, South Sudan joined the rest of the World on this very important day with different activities backdated a week ago in preparation of the date. The directorate of HIV/STI in the national ministry of Health convey engagement meetings with partners. The meetings were chaired by director of HIV/STI with coordination of Hepatitis CSOs.

Objective of WHD

1.      To raise the profile of Viral Hepatitis in the country and hence increase funding support from government and partners for its prevention and control of infections.

2.      To mobilize global and national level policymakers to develop cohesive programs and services to reach targets outlined in the GHSS strategy.

3.      To increase the knowledge of the general public on the benefits of testing and hence raise uptake of testing services that government and health partners provide in communities.

4.      To scale up testing among pregnant mothers so as to have a hepatitis free future generation

5.      To encourage the general public on early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of Viral Hepatitis

6.      To enhance the awareness about comprehensive care and treatment of people suffering from Hepatitis.

7.      To increase public awareness about the risk factors, remove social stigma and promote for early testing.

 

Activities of World Hepatitis Day

1: Radio talk show:

The talk shows were organized at eye radio and Miraya FM differently to increase knowledge through awareness on hepatitis virus infections. The talk show was sponsored by zone 72 programs and the rest were offering support for World Hepatitis Day. The attendee for talk show was Dr. Agai from MOH, Dr. Moses from WHO, Matiok from FOH, Jepete from AHC and seba the hepatitis B patients.

Public lecture on viral Hepatitis at university of Juba in senate Hall

WHO presented the overview of global hepatitis prevalence at senate hall at university of Juba by Dr. Moses Mutebi meanwhile the national hepatitis prevalent was done by Dr. Agai the director of HIV/STI. The clinical part was presented by Dr. Bino the physician.

Condoms distribution and Health Education.

The team that comprises of counsellors, prevention officer in the ministry of Health and hepatitis activist did health education on the best practice of prevention of HIV/Hepatitis/STI infections. The purpose of the awareness was to increase knowledge among the entire student’s community who turned up for the function. The mobilization team did their best by displaying posters and distributed informative leaflet to the public on viral hepatitis. The team also manage to distribute 6000 piece of condoms as part of preventive measure taught during awareness session. Therefore was no plan on the follow up condom use among the clients who took condoms.

Hepatitis can’t wait football match

Hepatitis can’t wait football match was played between Trinity Energy Limited and University of Juba. The game attracted mass people of people who messages on viral hepatitis during day of commemoration at playing ground of university of Juba. Trinity Energy Ltd won the game by 3:1 against university of Juba. Hepatitis can’t wait football match was gender inclusive where Jersey 10 was by played by girl, while the coach of Trinity Energy LTD was a woman and the referees who officiated the match had one of them was a woman.

Promotion of triple elimination of HIV, HBV& STIs Testing and counselling were conducted

 This was done by mobilizing and screening of pregnant women at Kator PHCC, Partners were invited to this very important exercise so that the continuity is assured. Mobilization were done through posters display in all corners of residential area of Kator. There was ongoing testing for viral hepatitis and dual testing for HIV and syphilis, both at university and Kator PHCC. The  results for  81 people tested for HBV at University of Juba stands at 6 positive cases for both male and female making the for  prevalent  of HBV at 7.4%. Meanwhile the antenatal care clinic test in Kator had 104 tested for both HBV&HIV. The ANC result for HBV is 6 positive where 4 were new cases and 2 were old one.  This indicate HBV prevalence among pregnant women is 5.8% and HIV infection is 2.9%.   The 3 positive cases had 2 new cases and 1 was old case revealed during counselling. The rest of results were to be reported through DHIS2 system.
